TOUR OF AUSTRIA: A DAY IN THE BREAKAWAY FOR ROBERTO GONZALEZ

TOUR OF AUSTRIA: A DAY IN THE BREAKAWAY FOR ROBERTO GONZALEZ

An unlucky day for the team Neri Sottoli – Selle Italia – KTM in the 1st stage of the Tour of Austria from Grieskirchen to Freistadt.

Roberto Gonzalez on the spotlight has he attacked from km 0 together with Brandle, Ritzinger, Gamper, Hrinkow, Lehner and Davies in a breakaway that reached an advantage of over 4′ before the reaction of the peloton brought by the team Movistar at the beginning of the final circuit of 16 km to be repeated three times with a 3rd cat. climb.

On the first of the three climbs Davies attacked leaving all his team mates behind him, including a very active Gonzalez, with a gap of 1’50” on top of the KOM on the peloton where our black and yellow train started to chase hard.

The rhythm set by the riders of Luca Scinto and Francesco Frassi was too hard for the leader who was caught inside the last lap but a crash in the final km left Giovanni Visconti behind and he couldn’t join the sprint won by Carlos Barbero with Dayer Quintana who was 11th and our top finisher.

The new leader of the GC is the latvian Liepins.

Tomorrow stage 2 from Zwettl to Wiener Neustadt with three KOM, the last one it will be 26 kms before the finish.
